Listed here are some of the free sites on the internet where you can access images that photographers have offered copyright free. In many instances they neither require acknowledgement on your final painting. Please note that the actual photograph itself must not be copied to anyone or to other sites or used for any other purpose than reference.
If you are a member of Facebook, there are countless free reference photo sites group, the only proviso is you need to became a member of the group. Do read the group rules in each case.
Below is a list of some of the sites on the internet that do offer free to use images. In all cases, do ensure you read and understand their terms of use.

Most images are free to use but read their terms of service first, in particular items 4, 5 and 6.
Depositphotos: https://depositphotos.com/
The site regularly releases free images you can use without crediting the photographer. Do read their terms of service before downloading.
123RF: https://www.123rf.com/license/free/
All images marked free can be used for any purpose without permission but with attribution to 123RF.
On Facebook: There are many groups that offer free reference photos for artists but you do need to join the group. One a member of the group you can access hundres of photos and even request images of particular items/scenes etc. Listed below with links are a few of them.
